Two very different seasons on Sri Lanka's Southern Coast — here's how to pick
Hikkaduwa and the Southern Coast run on two seasons, not four. Which one suits you depends on whether you're chasing calm water and clear skies, or quieter trails and dramatic surf.
November to April is the dry season: calm seas, consistently sunny days, and the best conditions for snorkeling the Hikkaduwa coral sanctuary, whale watching off Mirissa, and lounging by the infinity pool. This is peak season on the coast — book well ahead for December and January.
May to October brings the “emerald season” — lush, green, and quieter. Surfers come for the swell, the national parks are less crowded, and rates tend to be gentler. Expect afternoon showers rather than washed-out days; mornings are usually clear.
There's no wrong season at Serendipity Lake — the lake, the garden, and the infinity pool are the draw year-round. If snorkeling and whale watching are the priority, aim for December to March. If you want fewer crowds and don't mind the occasional shower, May to September is excellent value.
