Getting from Colombo Airport to Serendipity Lake

Everything you need to know about traveling from Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB) to our lakeside retreat in Hikkaduwa.

Serendipity Lake sits on the Southern Coast of Sri Lanka, roughly 144 km and a two-hour drive from Colombo's Bandaranaike International Airport. Most guests arrange a private transfer through us, but this guide also covers taxi, train and public transport options if you prefer to make your own way.

Transfer Options

Private Transfer (Recommended)

We arrange an air-conditioned private van for up to 6 guests, met at arrivals by name board. Approximate cost: USD 130 per vehicle, door to door in around 2 hours via the Southern Expressway. Pre-arrange at least 48 hours before arrival via WhatsApp or our contact form.

Airport Taxi

Metered and app-based taxis (PickMe, Uber) are available at the airport taxi counter. Expect to pay somewhat more than a pre-arranged private transfer, with less certainty over vehicle condition and driver English proficiency.

Train + Local Transport

The most budget-friendly option: take an airport taxi to Colombo Fort railway station (about 1 hour), then a coastal-line train south to Hikkaduwa (roughly 2-3 hours depending on service), followed by a short tuk-tuk ride to the hotel. Not recommended with heavy luggage or on a tight schedule.

Meet your driver at the airport

After clearing customs at Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB), look for a Serendipity Lake name board in the arrivals hall. We send the driver's name, photo and vehicle plate by WhatsApp the day before arrival.

Drive south on the Southern Expressway

Travel approximately 144 km south along the E01 Southern Expressway. The journey takes around 2 hours, with a short comfort stop available on request.

Arrive at Serendipity Lake

Your driver delivers you directly to the hotel entrance, where the team welcomes you with a refreshment. Check-in is from 3:00 PM; early arrivals can relax by the pool while a room is prepared.
