True Cinnamon: Our Plantation's Story
Most cinnamon in the world isn't cinnamon at all. It's cassia, a related bark that's harder, cheaper to grow, and stronger in flavour in a way that reads as "more cinnamon" to a palate that's never tasted the real thing. True cinnamon, Cinnamomum verum, grows almost nowhere else at scale, and Sri Lanka produces the vast majority of the world's supply. A one-acre stand of it grows on our own three-acre grounds, a short walk from the suites.
What's actually growing here
Serendipity Lake sits on three acres between Rathgama Lake and the road in, estate land that has been in the same family for four generations: a true-cinnamon plantation, fruit trees, coconut palms, and peppercorn vines, all growing together rather than in separated, labelled rows. It doesn't read as agriculture so much as garden, with the cinnamon understorey, tall palms overhead, and birdlife moving through all of it. Guests are often surprised that a working plantation can look this unstructured. It's meant to.
True cinnamon is harvested by peeling thin layers of inner bark from young shoots, which curl as they dry into the quills you'd recognise from a spice rack: pale, papery, and more delicate in fragrance than the reddish-brown cassia sticks sold as "cinnamon" almost everywhere outside Sri Lanka. The bark-peeling itself is a specific, practised skill, done by hand with a small blade, and it's one of the more genuinely interesting fifteen minutes you can spend on a Sri Lankan holiday.
Walking it for yourself
The cinnamon plantation tour is a guided walk through the grounds with a bark-peeling demonstration: how the bark is scored, lifted, and rolled, and what separates true cinnamon from the cassia most people have only ever cooked with. It runs alongside the guided nature trail and birdwatching walk, since the same acreage that grows the cinnamon also hosts fruit trees and the resident bird population. The two are worth combining if you're only doing one plantation walk during your stay. See current offers for current pricing.
The plantation earns its keep beyond the photo opportunity between the pool and dinner: it feeds the kitchen. Our private chef uses cinnamon from these grounds the way it's traditionally used here, in curries, in rice dishes, occasionally in a dessert, rather than as the after-the-fact sprinkle it becomes in a lot of Western cooking. If food is as much a reason for your visit as the water, Dinner for Two, Population Two goes further into how the kitchen actually runs.
Cinnamon also shows up off the plate. The aromatherapy massage (60 minutes; couple's version, 90 minutes) uses locally sourced cinnamon, coconut, and lemongrass oils, a direct, physical way to understand why this bark has been valuable enough to fight over for a few thousand years. Wellness by the Lake covers the rest of the spa, yoga, and quiet side of a stay here.
A short, real history
Ceylon cinnamon has been a global trade good since well before Sri Lanka was called Sri Lanka. The Portuguese, Dutch, and British each controlled cinnamon-growing land here in turn, and the spice funded a meaningful share of colonial-era shipping to Europe. None of that history is staged for guests; it's simply the reason true cinnamon grows here at all, and the reason the plant still matters enough locally that a small plantation is worth having on a three-acre lakeside property rather than given over entirely to lawn.
Bring it home, or don't
We don't run a gift shop off the plantation tour, and we're not going to pretend the tour fee is really about the cinnamon itself. It's about the twenty minutes someone spends showing you, hands-on, the difference between what you've been calling cinnamon and what's actually growing three metres away. Most guests leave able to tell the two apart in a spice aisle for the rest of their lives, which is a fairly good return for a short walk.
If the land is what draws you
For travellers whose interest runs more to the grounds than the water (the plantation, the fruit trees, the birdlife threading through both), the Plantation & Nature package brings several of these grounds-based experiences together for a quiet, grounded couple of nights rather than a packed itinerary. See current offers for what's currently included.
