A couple from Bavaria, married two weeks earlier, using the second leg of a longer Sri Lanka trip as their honeymoon proper. They'd already done a few nights of moving between sights further north and wanted the back half of the trip to be the opposite: nowhere to be, nothing to see except each other and a lake.

Day by day

Arrival, day one. A transfer from Colombo, welcome cocktails, and the Serenity Suite already turned down with its balcony open to the lake. Dinner was kept simple that first night, since they were travel-tired and in no hurry to start the itinerary.

Day two. A late floating breakfast, then the package's couple's massage, ninety minutes, side by side. In the evening came the trip's centrepiece: the private lakeside dinner with wine, the table decorated and set at the water's edge, no other guests anywhere near it. It's the moment both of them still talk about afterwards.

Day three. A sunset kayak, part of the package, out on water gone still and gold by early evening. A cinnamon plantation tour earlier in the day, then the celebration cake that evening: a small, unplanned toast on the patio.

Day four. The one active day of the stay: the half-day Galle Fort excursion, private car and guide, walking the ramparts and the old Dutch streets before the drive back. Dinner that night was built around whatever the day's walking had left them hungry for: the chef's usual nightly-changing menu, nothing themed or forced.

Day five, departure. Guaranteed late checkout, part of the package, meant a last floating breakfast and a slow final morning rather than an early alarm. No rush to the transfer.
