Taking the Whole Island: An Exclusive-Use New Year's Stay

An illustrative stay¹, built to show how an exclusive-use booking actually unfolds, not a record of one real group's holiday.

The guests

Two couples, travelling together for the turn of the year: one pair marking a tenth wedding anniversary, the other close friends who flew in to spend New Year's with them. Neither couple wanted to split into two separate hotel bookings on two different floors of a larger resort, and neither wanted to share a countdown with a ballroom full of strangers. They wanted the anniversary and the New Year to happen in the same place, without anyone else's holiday happening around them.

The brief

Book both suites. Keep the group together without the two couples being on top of each other the whole stay. Land somewhere inside the Super Peak window (the highest-demand stretch of the year, when Serendipity Lake's two suites can be booked as a single, private island) and time the dates so nobody has to pack a bag on the nights that matter. Checkout isn't available on the two blackout nights around the holidays, which made the planning simpler rather than harder: it forced the stay to hold both dates comfortably inside it.

Day by day

Arrival, two days before New Year's Eve. Transfer arranged from Colombo's airport, roughly two hours by road. Welcome cocktails on the jetty, a walk-through of the grounds with the butler-manager, and the two couples split into their suites: the anniversary couple took the Orchard Suite for its private patio and garden access, and their friends went upstairs to the Serenity Suite for the panoramic lake view. A light dinner, no set itinerary for the evening.

The next day. A guided cinnamon plantation tour in the morning, then the pool for the rest of the day, its infinity edge blurring into the lake beyond it. A kayak out at dusk for whoever wanted it; the other couple stayed on the jetty with a drink instead. There was no group activity either couple had to join.

New Year's Eve. The centrepiece of the whole stay was a complimentary private lakeside dinner for all four, decorated and set at the water's edge: the one perk that comes with taking both suites. With no checkout scheduled for the next morning, no one was watching the clock. Midnight came on the jetty, not at a resort-wide countdown stage.

New Year's Day. A slow, deliberately unplanned day. Floating breakfast on the pool, a couple's massage for the anniversary pair, reading and quiet for the other two. Dinner later than usual, nobody minding.

Departure, the day after. A last floating breakfast, a slow pack-up, and the transfer back to the airport: four nights, two suites, one shared holiday.

What it cost

Each suite is booked separately at its own Direct rate. Super Peak carries a premium above the regular Peak rate that runs the rest of the year. Current figures for both suites are always live via our booking engine, since only 38 room-nights exist across the whole Super Peak window and rates hold firm within it. The private lakeside dinner for the group, an experience booked individually the rest of the year, came complimentary as the exclusive-use perk. On top of the two suites, this stay added a guided cinnamon plantation tour, one guided kayak, one couple's massage, and floating pool breakfasts on the two final mornings as extras. See current offers for current add-on pricing.

What to steal from this itinerary

Split the suites by what each couple actually wants (garden and patio for one pair, panoramic balcony for the other) rather than assuming an even split matters more than preference. Time a Super Peak stay so the two checkout blackout nights fall inside the booking rather than at either end of it. Let the complimentary group dinner be the one fixed plan of the whole stay, and leave the rest of the days loose enough that two couples travelling together don't end up on each other's schedule the entire time. And book early: a window with only 38 room-nights in it doesn't hold space for long.
